Do you feel like diabetes has consumed your life? Does it take over, push you around and exhaust you? Perhaps you feel guilt around your diabetes, shame even...or maybe you just get upset about the lack of understanding from people who don't live with diabetes, or the lack of sensitivity, even of loved ones. It can be so easy to get resentful and feel like you are the only person in the universe who is going through the daily rollercoaster of diabetes.

But you are not alone.

Welcome to Diabetes Can’t Stop Me – a blog and community all about creating a happy healthy life with diabetes - yes it is entirely possible to have a happy healthy life with diabetes and thrive!

I know because I am a person with type 1 diabetes, writer and blogger, diabetes advocate, educator, counsellor and consultant; and PhD Candidate. I am mama to 3 gorgeous boys, and lover of people and planet.

I have lived with type 1 diabetes since 1979 when I was 12 years old and worked in diabetes since 2001 when I started a website called Diabetes Counselling Online - a world first, groundbreaking free online diabetes counselling service and community, supporting literally thousands and thousands of people all over the world living with diabetes. I ran this until 2016, when we closed our doors. I decided that we needed to do more to help and support people with diabetes, due to my personal experiences of being unable to find the support I needed in my early 30's. The internet had arrived and I knew we could use this to create connections and communicate with each other.

You can read more about me and the history of this service and blog here.

Being all about health and happiness does not mean Diabetes Can’t Stop Me is all about ignoring the hard parts of diabetes, or the hard parts about life!

Note to self: you can not take away the fact that diabetes is hard. It is hard work. It is unfair and it really sucks a lot of the time.

You have much more in your life than diabetes, and you can find ways to deal with the shitty moments, times, weeks, months.

Diabetes Can't Stop Me is about sharing real stories, tips, ideas and inspiration; standing up for our rights, making sure people with diabetes are heard; and making connections - this is probably the most important thing I have learned in all of my years working in diabetes and mental health - knowing you are not alone is one of the most single important thing you can do for your wellbeing and happiness. When you can see the whole picture, you see what is possible and you don’t let diabetes stop you living your life however you desire.

Life with diabetes is tough. But it is just one part of you and your life. I hear people talking about not using the word “diabetic” but for me, diabetic is part of who I am – I am also a writer, blogger, podcaster, retailer, mama, wife, singer, gardener, nature lover and conservationist, friend, researcher, and so much more.

There is much in life to experience and enjoy, and despite diabetes, you can have a happy, healthy life. And I think, personally, that diabetes makes us remarkable.

How do I know that?

Because I have lived with type 1 diabetes since 1979 and worked in diabetes for so long, I have been connected to thousands and thousands of people across the world. I have become a leader in diabetes and mental health. I have talked with so many people who are really and genuinely, remarkable.
