What kinds of things can online diabetes counselling help with?
Here are just a few examples of what we can address in online diabetes counselling.
Helen Edwards - PhD Candidate (Medicine), Social Worker (Bach of Social Wk, Hons), Diabetes Educator (Grad Cert Diabetes Ed & Management)
Welcome, I am the founder of Diabetes Can't Stop Me - Helen Edwards, type 1 diabetic since 1979, writer and blogger, diabetes advocate, educator, counsellor and consultant, and PhD Candidate looking at the wellbeing of women with pre-existing diabetes during the pregnancy journey.
I am mama to 3 gorgeous boys and have worked in diabetes & mental health since 2001 when I started a website called Diabetes Counselling Online - a world first, groundbreaking free online diabetes counselling service and community, supporting literally thousands and thousands of people all over the world living with diabetes. I ran this until 2016, when we closed our doors.
This site has now been relaunched as Diabetes Can't Stop Me - and our online diabetes counselling services are a new addition. They are available in a LIMITED number of online appointments via video link up each week. I can not make changes to your diabetes management and no medical advice will be given. Please ensure you read the disclaimer before starting any counselling.
When I started way back in 2001, I felt that more needed to be done for the wellbeing and mental health of all people with diabetes. People with diabetes suffer up to twice the rates of depression compared to the rest of the population, reduced wellbeing and increased stress and anxiety. We can live wonderful lives, but support from health care professionals, loved ones and other people with diabetes is vital. You can read more about my work here.
I am a member of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association, the Australian Association of Social Workers and the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society. I regularly attend and present at local and national conferences about diabetes and mental health, as well as diabetes and pregnancy wellbeing.

Once you make a booking I will contact you via email to make a time to suit us both, one payment has been confirmed. I will send you details of how to login to the Zoom video room and if this is an issue we can change to Skype. Zoom is a private and stable video room we are in together. It is best if you have a quiet, private space and headphones are a great idea but not necessary. You can join on your tablet or phone but the screen will be small so it is best on a laptop or computer.
You need a computer with a webcam and microphone. You can use a headset to make it more private. We need your email address to send the video link up details to. You need a private space with a reliable internet connection.
No, we will never make individual management recommendations or changes to your diabetes regime. You will need to speak to your doctor or usual diabetes team for this to support.
You can not currently claim under medicare for our online diabetes counselling services. You will need to check with your own health care fund about any cover.
We appreciate at least 24 hours notice but understand these things happen. Likewise on occasion we may need to reschedule for unforseen reasons. If you need to cancel please email ASAP so we can rebook. If you decide not to go ahead at all, and you give us notice, we can look at a refund for your payment. If you do not attend an appointement and give no notice at all we can not make a refund.
