Wellbeing describes your happiness, confidence, physical condition and general outlook on life. It is about feeling good and taking care of yourself – things that can be neglected when juggling the demands of everyday living and particularly when you live with diabetes.
Feelings of anger, guilt, fear, discouragement and a lack of motivation about diabetes are common. Sometimes people can find life with diabetes overwhelming and have increased stress from the day to day effort of managing. Diabetes burn out is a common problem and risks of depression are increased.
You are not alone if you are experiencing these things and they are totally normal. Having good mental health requires us to focus just as much on looking after our emotional, psychological and social health, as we do our physical health. Just as we would exercise, eat well and visit the doctor for check ups, we need to do things that enhance our mental health and wellbeing – after all, wellbeing and health go hand-in-hand.
